I recently decided to go to Pubwells Restaurant after being recommended a few times by good friends of mine, and to be honest, I wish I went sooner! The first time I went was for breakfast, which was absolutely the best breakfast i've had at any restaurant to date. I had the french toast with fresh fruit (server told me the bread is homemade fresh weekly and I could tell!) and my husband had the salmon egg benedict which was equally fantastic. Since visiting for breakfast, I've been a handful of times, for lunch and dinner. Enjoying the variety of pizzas, daily specials and on tap beer. There's a new soup daily (also homemade) and i've become especially attached to the calzone specials. The service is friendly and the environment is just right. The hockey games brings in a crowd and so does chilly weekend mornings. Overall this place is by far my favorite restaurant in Ottawa. Read more

The Cheshire Cat Pub is a unique British style pub just outside of Kanata. When you walk in past the red telepone booth, it feels really authentic with the unusual "kitch" that you would find in pubs in England. We were just there, and found that they had taken off most of there regular drafts to replace them with Ontario craft beers. My husband was sad to not have a pint of Erdinger, but we learned that they were doing this to honour Ontario Craft Brew Week and found ourselves trying The Flying Monkey and a pint of Neustad 10w30 (beers I had never heard of!) Good for them we thought! We also learned that most of the menu incorporates local produce, meat and dairy. Anyway, the food was amazing! Pub fare, but with serious style. I had the Chicken Curry, my husband had the hamburger special and our friends both had the fish and chips. The service was friendly and laid back and the owner came up to introduce himself and made us feel like we had been coming for years. It was hopping busy! This restaurant is such a contradiction. It has the potential to become the best restaurant in Ottawa (if not the country). All the elements are in place. Awesome, atmosphere, great staff (mostly), and good food. The only stick in the ointment is a single toxic personality in the guise of a server, who seems intent on destroying all of that and ensuring that you never come back. She's a bit older than the other servers (who are all excellent), but this is not about age. Irene's up the road seems like an older crowd of patrons and servers, but they are awesome...but I digress, this not about Irene's, I just wanted to show that the contradiction at Patty's boils down to one personality. No long winded review here just want to state the facts. Excellent food, service is great, atmosphere is good but not great considering its in a parking lot. But take note that the bathrooms just reek, I was there 2 yrs earlier and the one thing I remembered was how smelly the mens bathroom was, well it hasn't changed. Its such a turnoff because it only makes me wonder if management has no control or cares less about sanitary conditions then I wonder how the kitchen is maintained. I came here for lunch a few months ago and was very impressed. We arrived just as the place opened up; the upstairs dining area had not been opened yet. Regardless, I asked if we could have a table on the upper level and the wait staff accommodated our request and opened up the upstairs area and we were given the option to have our choice of any table we wanted. We chose a table on the North side of the restaurant with a great view of the By-ward Market. My burger tasted a little dry but as I had never tried buffalo or bison before I didn't know if that was normal or not. Five of my girlfriends and I decided to try out Woody's for dinner and cocktails as it came highly recommended by one of our foodie friends. We were promptly greeted at the door by a friendly server who showed us to our candlelit table beside a fireplace. My friends and I each decided to order a different cocktail or martini and try a few sips of each - my favourites were the Woody's Caesar and Dream Soda. For dinner I tried the dinner special - a generous half rack of pork side ribs with jalapeno apple bbq sauce, homemade creamed corn, mashed potatoes and a buttermilk biscuit, it fell away from the bone effortlessly and was cooked to perfection. I also had a bite of the sliders that my friend had been raving about and the combination of carmelized onion and brie cheese was delicious! We all had plans to go out to another spot after, but were having so much fun at Woody's that we decided to stay. I will definitely be coming back and would recommend this pub to anyone in the future. Read more
